The following is an interview of Tope the organizer and producer of the yearly event NEA (Nigeria Entertainment Awards). This award has taken place in many countries and is said to be an avenue of celebrating talented young artists both in Nigeria and Africa. In the interview,Tope let us into the dreams and targets they have for the awards and also on their readiness for the awards which will be coming up on by September later this year.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Tope Esan, Executive Producer and President of the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
How long have this awards been on and what do you plan on achieving with it?
The awards was founded in 2006 and its in its 7th year this year. Our main purpose of the awards is to recognize the many contributions of African entertainers to the global entertainment scene.
Can you tell me which countries the awards has been held in?
The awards has been held primarily in the United States.
Ok, What are we expecting from the NEA this year?
We are gearing up to the biggest NEA awards thus far.The African Entertainment scene continues and we are expecting the biggest name in New York later this year on September 2nd 2012.
Looking at the Nigerian/African music industry,do you think we have gone far enough to compete with the western world music Industry?
I truly believe we should not be competing or comparing our music with the western world. With NEA,our main goal is to sell our entertainment(music,Film etc) to the western world in its natural state not westernized. Afrobeats is our music and the sound of this new generation. We have moved from highlife,juju,fuji etc to more of funky afrobeat sound. Musicians need to strive to continue to find ways to establish our original sounds.
Which artist are we looking forward to seeing in the upcoming awards?
Wow great question,the likes of Wiz Kid,Davido,Eldee,Nneka,Tuface,Flavour and all the actors and actresses. Really everyone in the industry is invited and expected in New York.
How is the selection of the winner going to be?
Selection of winners will be determined via sms text and online voting.
