Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi, has dedicated the Nigerian football team’s Sunday victory over Namibia to the victims of the Dana Air plane crash of Sunday, June 3, 2012.
He said this during a post-match conference held shortly after the match, where he confirmed that the match was made tougher due to the news of the plane crash.
‘We dedicate this win to all the victims of the plane crash. It was a very tragic one and we actually got the news before the match and it depressed us because these are Nigerians like us. We were pained and just had to go on the pitch to play for them. This is a very sad day and we can only pray that God will grant the families of the departed the fortitude to bear the loss‘ an emotional Keshi said.
On the match, Keshi says he learnt that there are no small teams anymore in Africa, and that his players had difficulties scoring, due to the defensive nature of the Namibian team. The coach added that he would work harder to ensure a better match against Malawi in Blantyre, on Thursday, June 7, 2012.
The match, played in Calabar, ended with a 1-0 scoreline, made possible byIkechukwu Uche‘s 80th minute strike, securing Nigeria’s place in the on-going World cup qualifier.
