Olympic world record holder Michael Phelps’ performance has spurred different reactions, as the swimming champion won his first gold in the 2012 Olympics on Wednesday August 1, 2012, in the 4X100 men’s relay.
The 25-year-old American was declared the most decorated Olympian of all time following his win, which brought his medals total to 19 – 15 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze.
Phelps’ performance at the beginning of this year’s competition was far from impressive as he barely made it through the preliminaries, and lost to South AfricanChad le Clos to claim silver in the men’s 200m butterfly event.
The win has placed the swimmer ahead of the 48-year-old record of 18 medals, held by former Soviet gymnast, Larisa Latynina.
