London club Arsenal FC
has officially confirmed its pre-season tour to Nigeria on August 5,
2012 in Abuja. The visit will be the first time the London based club
will be coming to Nigeria.
David Omigie of DanJan Sports confirmed that everything has been sorted out as regards the trip, and the only issue to attend to is the opposition.
‘We are working on the opposition
and once that is finalised we will announce it to the public in
conjunction with the London club‘.
According to Arsenal, via a statement on
its official website, the club last visited Africa during a tour to
South Africa in July 1993, and is returning as a result of the fantastic
support which exists for the team, not only in Nigeria, but across the
entire continent.
‘I realised when I was at the World
Cup in South Africa how popular a club like Arsenal is in Africa,
especially in Nigeria. It is unbelievable‘, said Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger.
DanJan Sports brought Manchester United and Portsmouth FC
to Abuja for pre-season friendlies in July 2008. Manchester United
played against FA cup winners Portsmouth FC, and Pompey later played
against local team, Kano Pillars.
We’re told Further details regarding the
match in Nigeria will be announced by the organisers as soon as they
are confirmed, but according to speculation, the likely team to play
against the London giants are Zambia, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria or
Ivory Coast.
