RICK ROSS WINS NAME OWNERSHIP

Popular rapper Rick Ross has won the legal battle against the use of the name ‘Rick Ross’, a case filed against him by the popular drug dealer Freeway Ricky Ross.
Ricky Donnell Ross popularly called Freeway Ricky Ross,  the acclaimed original owner of the name Rick Ross lost his long-time name lawsuit to rapper Rick Ross at the Los Angeles county superior court on Thursday, March 29, 2012 – this being the second time.
In an interview with urban website allhiphop.com, Freeway Rick said ‘Basically they’re saying [I waited too long], I should have filed a lawsuit five days after I got out of prison’.
‘I feel that the law has let me down. I feel not only have they let me down, but they’ve let down the black community as a whole’, he expressed further.
Freeway Rick is a drug dealer who claimed to have sold $3m worth of illegal drugs a day and according to estimations, he exported several tons of cocaine to New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and other places, with more profit worth of $600 million.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1996 after being convicted of trying to purchase more than 100 kilograms of cocaine from a federal agent. His sentence was later reduced to 20 years and he was later released on September 29, 2009.
Since 2008, Freeway Ricky Ross has been protesting that Rick Ross co-opted his name and former lifestyle to make millions of Dollars.
Rapper William Leonard Robert now owns the trademark to the real name ‘Rick Ross’.
Freeway Ricky Ross has however agreed to move on; hoping to adjust his business strategy since ‘he can no longer use his own name’.
You have these people going around portraying us in an image that’s not what we are,’ I didn’t sell drugs so I could sit in everybody’s face, drive around in a Rolls-Royce and wear big gold chains. I sold drugs because I was poor, illiterate, didn’t know any better and had no other opportunities’.

EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS: DON JAZZY’S NEW HOME

Donjazzy's Crib
We’ve been investigating; now, Nigerian Entertainment Today can confirm details of super-producer Don jazzy’s new home.
D’banj’s estranged partner has moved into to a super expensive house inside NICON Estate, in Lekki, Lagos.
Real estate experts tell us the least expensive price for a NICON house, is in the realm of N9m per annum. We’ve been told Jazzy’s home (pictured, with a black Range Rover parked in front)  is in a ‘choice area’ in the estate, and ‘not in anyway cheap’.
Meaning he could have coughed out up to N30m or more for the new pad, we’re told.
‘I know he has one house he bought in Lagos. But I’m sure he didn’t buy the house in NICON. So he must have rented the place, and it must have cost a fortune’, one source told us last night.
Sources say one of the reasons that informed Jazzy’s relocation, was when he discovered his partner  Dbanj, with whom he recently split,had changed the keys and locked up the Lekki residence once occupied by himself and Don Jazzy. We’re told the producer briefly stayed with another Mo’Hits act Dr SID at his 1004 residence, before moving into his own home.
Before moving over to Lekki, a Lagos suburb favoured by the upwardly mobile and elite Lagosians, the Mo’hits crew all lived together at the popular Maryland duplex.
When our photographers paid Don Jazzy a visit over the weekend, they were told that he had travelled to South Africa. The producer along with Wande Coal, D’Prince and Dr SID had attended a launch of a Samsung Hi-Fi product which he reportedly helped design.

Ronaldo has scored 131 goals in 131 games for Madrid...
Real Madrid football club has witnessed yet another hero with Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace over the weekend. Ronaldo is now number 10 in the all-time list of the greatest goal scorers in the glorious real Madrid history with his 131 goal on Saturday in a 5-1 win over Real Sociedad.
His brace last Saturday saw him reach his 100 La-liga goals in 92 games, breaking the club record held by Ferenc Puskas since the 1960’s and setting a new primera division mark in the process.

Ronaldo now has 131 goals in 131 official games for the Spanish giant. He scored 33 goals in his first season, 53 the second season and 42 goals so far this 2011-2012 season and still counting.

MO’HITS WAR: ‘MESSIER THAN YOU THINK’

All’s fair in love and war…
That’s clearly the situation between estranged Mo’Hits bosses D’banj and Don Jazzy as their once rock-solid business and relationship continues to disintegrate.
Just a week ago, the hit producer Michael ‘Don Jazzy’ Collins practically confirmed the rumours about his on-going rift with Dapo ‘D’banj’ Oyebanjo, causing a mega media frenzy in Nigeria and elsewhere. Of course the whole brouhaha spread like wildfire, and in minutes, words like ‘Don Jazzy’, D’banj’, ‘Mo’Hits’, were trending on Twitter.
The last week has however been a very interesting period for those who the ‘breakup’ has affected; as entertainment journalists and tabloids offer analysis on what might have shattered their relationship, some are trying to bring the bosses back together.
Other than those who will lose tremendously from the fall out, we hear even theGovernor of Lagos summoned both parties in a move to restore the seemingly unshakable bond. Their parents and mentors have also intervened, hoping they’ll see reason and possibly resolve the conflict.
But close friends say too much water has gone under the bridge, and bringing them back right now looks more like a herculean task.
‘It’s more messy and dirty than you think’, one insider tells us. ‘They aren’t on talking terms, it’s that serious. I doubt they want to see eye to eye anymore, at least for now.’
D’banj, who was in the country last week, left for the US on Tuesday night. Some days earlier, we learn that he changed keys and locked up the Lekki residence which was once occupied by himself and Don Jazzy. The producer, who we reported to have been staying with Dr SID at his 1004 residence, has now relocated to the super expensive NICON Estate, also in Lekki. We’re told he may have coughed out nearly N30m for the new place.
Despite all the happenings, the Mo’Hits crew seem to be keeping quite busy – Dr SID (who now seems to be Don Jazzy’s right hand man) has professed his alliance with the producer; ‘Don Jazzy is d most important piece of Mo hits, who doesn’t get the credit he deserves, without his creativity a lot of things will not exist’, SID said via Twitter, in apparent support for his boss.
Meanwhile, Wande Coal recently premiered the video of one of his singles ‘Private trips’ which has received positive reviews.
And last week, D’Prince was invited by officers of the Nigerian Police Force for questioning in the on-going murder case of late club owner Suzy Q, with whom he had a failed business partnership.
And, as if to confirm our report on the new clique: the quartet of SID, D’Prince, Wande Coal and Jazzy were in South Africa last weekend for the launch ofSamsung’s new Hi-Fi sound system which Don Jazzy reportedly helped design. D’banj and his brother Kay Switch were conspicuously missing; even though our investigations reveal that the deal had been signed and sealed, before the Mo’Hits brouhaha reached its peak.
Meanwhile, D’banj’s manager, Oluseun ‘Bankulli’ Abisagboola has refused to reply several NET enquiries, seeking comments and clarifications. Same for Don Jazzy. Sunday Are who officially managed the label’s talents, also didn’t respond to our calls. Stalemate.
One source told us: ‘They’re all trying as much as possible to keep mute, so as not to blow the situation further. They’ve been advised to keep quiet until the time is right to speak. Especially D’banj, who’s the one that looks bad in all of this. So I’m not surprised they’re not talking to you’.
It’s only a matter of time…

BROADWAY MUSICAL ON 2PAC TO BE MADE

2Pac
A new Broadway musical about late rap legend, Tupac Amaru Shakur is reportedly in the works as producers have obtained the approval of the late rapper’s mother, Afeni Shakur on the project.
According to the producers of the musical, Ms Afeni Shakur was ecstatic about the project when they reached out to her about it, and was appreciative of their gesture.
The musical, which will be titled, ‘Holler if You Hear Me’, is to be directed by black theatre legend and Broadway director, Kenny Leon. The release date has however not been decided yet. Casting is reportedly to begin immediately.
The musical however will not focus primarily on Tupac personally, but will revolve around a fictional story about two childhood friends in a Midwestern industrial city and their extended families.
Tupac Amaru Shakur (June 16, 1971 – September 13, 1996), known by his stage names 2Pac, Pac, and Makaveli, was an American rapper and actor. He has sold over 75 million albums worldwide making him one of the best-selling music artists in the world.
On September 7, 1996, Shakur was shot four times in Las Vegas, Nevada. He died six days later of respiratory failure and cardiac arrest.

DON JAZZY IN ‘MOUTH-WATERING’ SAMSUNG DEAL

It’s not up to a week since Don Jazzy announced his leaving Mo’Hits label but he’s already moving on with his career. The hit producer just yesterday Thursday, March 23, 2012 in South Africa helped launch a series of new products from popular electronics company Samsung.
Up next is Don Jazzy from Nigeria launching the Samsung Built for Africa Sound System. #SamsungAfricaForum’, Samsung Africa announced via its official twitter handle @SamsungSA
Kenya’s Alan Oyier and Don Jazzy walked up to the stage to unveil the new product. Don Jazzy had helped design the new Afro pop range of Hi-Fi units some time ago.
We tried reaching the producer for comments but as at the time of this report, he had yet to reply our mails. But those close to him tell us the Samsung deal had been on before the Mo’Hits break-up, and that the producer was ‘handsomely paid’. ‘I can’t tell you how much he was paid. But trust me it’s mouth-watering’, an insider who knows the details of the deal told us this afternoon.
The four-day conference tagged Samsung Africa Forum started on Thursday, March 22 and will end on Friday, march 25, 2012.

What Makes A Hit Song?

...
Hit songs Vs. Good songs…………..
It is essential to stress, first things first, that this article attempts to address the qualities and general characteristics which distinguish a song as a hit single and not necessarily as a good song. A good song may mean different things to different people based on genre, artiste’s voice, lyrical content etc. but a hit song is humbly respected or at the very least is reluctantly recognised and accepted for what it is even among people who are not necessarily fans of the genre, style of music or the plethora of other reasons which decide what kind of song people prefer to listen to.
So, what exactly is a hit song?
In the US and the UK, a song is usually considered to be a hit single when it has reached the official Billboard Magazine’s Hot 100 or the top 75 of the “UK Singles Chart” and stayed there for at least one week. In the absence of any such organised and generally accepted music chart standard in Nigeria, it becomes essential, for the sake of a respectable discussion reference point to at least try to pinpoint what we may precisely refer to as a hit song. Considering the output of songs made in Nigeria as compared to that of the US and the UK, a top 20 chart list seems to be an ideal standard, and in fact, local music chart of radio stations are usually between a top 5 and top 10 limit so a top 20 list sounds fair.
So what determines the songs in the top 20? The most obvious and relatively un-bias methods to go about this are to choose songs most played by radio stations (usually based on listeners demand) and songs most played by DJ’s (sure party and club bangers). The last way which poses problems for obvious reasons is just to try and sample how popular a song is among people generally.
One may be tempted to say at this point that fast paced party songs hold an unfair advantage but experience has shown that this is not the case e.g. 9ice’s massive hit single “gongo aso” is not a party song, Banky W’s “strong thing” is a pure R&B song and Wizkid’s breakthrough single “holla at your boy” is obviously not a dance track and you and I know that these tracks did very well on radio stations much to people’s demand and delight and not just because radio stations wanted to play them.
Summarily, a hit song(in Nigeria) may be considered as one of the top 20 most popular songs on radio, DJ turntables and (informally) people’s ipods, phones and other gadgets used for playing music on the move.
Hit Songs!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes unexpected even by the recording artiste, often elusive even for long timers and the holy grail of the music industry……..a hit song! One, just one is enough to take an artiste from complete obscurity to national and even occasionally continental stardom. What make these songs what they are? What gives them their magic?
The secrets……..shhhhh
1. Instrumental- A 50-storey building must of a necessity be built on a solid foundation, in the same vein; it is difficult to find a hit song done on a shoddy instrumental. It must however be pointed out that instrumentals only will not make or mar a song, much of the remaining work is also up to the artiste.
2. Artiste Voice- This factor, is for obvious reasons more important for singers than for rappers although a certain feel and attitude to the voice of a rapper also helps. Listen to some good songs done by “upcoming” or not very popular artiste and imagine how they would sound if they were sang by the successful artistes we now know and you may see what I mean. The Pitch at which an artiste can sing and the power in his voice usually contributes to the reception the song will get from people although they may not consciously notice it.
3. Chorus/Hook- A catchy chorus on a song or hook on a rap recording can turn around the fortune of a song drastically. In fact, a trend among even some “big” acts of recent is to create a catchy chorus and talk about random issues not even vaguely related to the chorus of the song and not surprisingly some of them have turned out to be hit songs.
4. Tune/Melody- This goes hand in hand with the “secret” given above except for the fact that it covers the whole song other than the chorus/hook part of it. Memorable and hauntingly beautiful tunes stay with listeners and make them repeat the song endlessly.
5. Theme- This refers to the subject matter been discussed by an artiste. For singers, I say pointedly here that the actual depth or quality of the lyrics been used to articulate the artiste’s thoughts don’t seem to be particularly important (I believe I don’t have to say this doesn’t apply to rapping where lyrical ability is the backbone). The tunes used to carry even poorly written lyrics seem to trump the actual quality of the lyrics. In some situation however, lyrics discussing the themes seem to get some songs to the hit single status without necessarily catchy tunes. In these situations, the themes are usually topics which listeners find interestingly compulsive to listen to e.g. political issues, sex, alcohol, party etc.
Been an avid fan of “Naija hip hop”, the five “secrets” above individually or in combination are the key factors which I have repeatedly noticed are responsible for giving birth to massive hits. I chose, for discretion’s sake, not to mention names of specific artistes whom I believe the “secrets” above have worked for. I leave to my esteemed reader the interesting task of pinpointing artistes whose success is hinged on the factors listed above.
Your comments and insights will be appreciated.
Keep supporting Naija music.

7 Female Students Fell Inside This Well, 2 Gave Up The Ghost

Just about when no one was looking, the unexpected happened and by the time it was over, two female student of the institution (Ekpoma) were pronounced dead. May their Gentle soul rest in peace and I just hope the admin of that institution will do something fast about the well and other weak facilities in the institution.
Tragedy struck early this morning at the Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, after seven female students fell into a well located inside one of the hostels inside the school compound while fetching water and doing other things around the well.

According to eye witnesses, three girls were washing on top of the well, which is the hostel's only source of water, while the remaining four were sitting on its top, when all of a sudden the well collapsed beneath them. All seven girls fell into the well.

Other students around the hostel when the incident occurred rescued 6 of the alive. Unfortunately one died inside the well. Another one died on the way to the hospital. The remaining five are receiving treatment at the hospital.

WHY THAT OTHER WIZBOY’S ‘INFINITY’ VIDEO SUCKS

Wizboy and Slim Brown on the set of ‘Infinity’
There are very few ‘indigenous’ melodies that gain more than my passing interest at any given time, Wizboy’s ‘Infinity’ featuring Slim Brown is one of them.
The song, released by the artiste sometime in 2011, harps on the attainment of success and its enjoyment after a period of ‘hustlin’.
But the video for the song, the second video, directed by Godfather made a total rubbish of the concept of the song.
Apart from the fact that the video was an obvious step up from the first effort (which was directed by Akin Alabi), featuring better picture quality and resolution, and of course a platform for Wizboy to flaunt his new status, this video was rather dully used to portray his ‘arrival’.
For one, the car wash scene, featuring only one car, a Range Rover, in the beginning was as unrealistic as it could get.
Then the same SUV makes a re-incarnation as a prop on the set to flaunt with. Now, the choice of a Range Rover over an Infinity, which the song repeatedly references in its hooks, is… (sigh)
Altogether, it is a case of a good song with a terribly conceptualized video on HD!

World's Cooliest Nationals, Nigerians Ranks At No.6

(1) Brazilians :::
Picture: Without Brazilians we wouldn't have samba and Rio carnival :::
Here are the world's coolest nationals, these guys are the ones who truly enjoys life, they are happy and fulfilled, cooler than a Penguin at any point in time.

(2) Singaporeans :::
Think about it: in this digital age where blogging and updating Facebook are pretty much all that anyone does anymore, old school notions of cool have been rebooted. No longer the laughingstock, geeks are now inheriting the Earth.

(3) Jamaicans :::

There's more to Jamaicans than reggae, including Rastafarian (the most kick-back religion ever invented), an accent that’s the envy of the English-speaking world and the planet’s most distinctive and recognizable hairstyle.

(4) Mongolians :::

long with a carefully crafted air of quiet mystery, these unflappable souls pretty much perfected the freewheeling, nomadic cowboy existence, throat singing and yurts.

(5) Americans :::

What? Americans? War-starting, planet-polluting, over-consuming, arms-bearing Americans? Surely we can't be suggesting that the people who voted George W. Bush into the White House (twice!) are cool?

(6) Nigerians :::
Nigerians are on this list, believe it or not, Nigerians are happy people. Even in the middle of unrest, Nigerians still find time to party with their friends and family members going all around town with a big smile on their faces. Don't expect to see Nigerians smiling in the sun, you need to come around during the evening (Friday/Saturday/Sunday)
